The Center for International Student Access at George Mason University in Fairfax, VA is offering a Graduate Assistantship for Literacy/Common Reading Program Coordinator to support the growing number of international freshmen enrolling in the ACCESS program, which grants “provisional” admission for one academic year. The program leader will help to develop and implement literacy-focused activities and direct Common Reading Group Leaders (undergraduate teaching assistants) working with small reading groups for select English Language Learners.  This position is ideal for students studying in fields related to adult literacy.

The coordinator will help to develop the program based on guidance and feedback from the Center Director and the ELI Language Resource Coordinator. The coordinator will train group leaders to successfully  run weekly “book clubs”, and will run small groups with alternative literacy activities related to both course-based and non-course based reading materials.

QUALIFICATIONS: Must be enrolled in one of George Mason University’s degree-seeking programs. Previous experience working in a mentoring or tutoring situation strongly preferred; strong reading/writing/oral communication skills in English is required. Strong organizational and leadership skills needed. Students majoring in Education, Linguistics, Modern and Classical Languages, and/or English are strongly encouraged to apply.

COMPENSATION: This year-long position officially starts August 15, 2012, lasts for one semester, and pays at the university standard assistantship salary based on educational background, for 20 hours weekly with 6 credit tuition waiver (at the in-state tuition rate) each semester.  This position is eligible for health insurance benefits. Teaching experience strongly preferred. Doctoral students will receive primary consideration.
