The Center for International Student Access is looking for a teaching assistant to support two different courses during the 2012-2013 academic year:

  • PROV 105 – American Cultures (Fall): American Cultures is an anthropology course designed for international and immigrant students in the ACCESS program and meets a global understanding general education requirement. 
  • PROV 106 – Introduction to Research Methods (Spring): Research Methods is a challenging introduction to undergraduate student scholarship.

Each semester, the GA will support two sections (and recitations if needed) of one of the courses.

All of the students in these courses are multilingual speakers of English. The position’s duties include teaching, grading, one-on-one student consultations, attending meetings, and lecturing responsibilities on occasion. The individual must have demonstrated experience in research and scholarly inquiry. Students with 9-12 credits of research methods in their graduate courses of study are encouraged to apply.

QUALIFICATIONS: Must be enrolled in one of George Mason University’s degree-seeking programs. Previous experience working in a mentoring or tutoring situation strongly preferred; strong reading/writing/oral communication skills in English is required. Strong organizational and leadership skills needed. Students majoring in Sociology, Anthropology, Cultural Studies, and Education are encouraged to apply.

COMPENSATION: This year-long position officially starts August 13, 2012, and pays at the university standard assistantship salary based on educational background, for 20 hours weekly with 6 credit tuition waiver (at the in-state tuition rate) each semester.  This position is eligible for health insurance benefits. Teaching experience strongly preferred. Doctoral students will receive primary consideration.
