Applied Linguistics Adjunct Faculty/Graduate Lecturer (Filled)

The George Mason University, Center for International Student Access (CISA) invites applicants for the part-time Adjunct Faculty/Graduate Lecturer positions to teach one or more courses focused on English for Academic Purposes for international, multilingual speakers of English for a range of skill areas including: Reading, Writing, Listening, Speaking, and Grammar.

These small group or individualized instruction courses are designed for graduate-level international students in the BRIDGE program. For more information on the program, visit

One or two semester appointments beginning August 1, 2012 or January 1, 2013 to teach one to two sections. We particularly need faculty available to teach during the day between 9AM and 3PM and have experience working with adult multilingual speakers of English with:

  • Ability to meet students at specific, varied points of need (linguistic and rhetorical), including direct feedback on intelligibility, intonation, syllable stress, etc.
  • Ability to teach/review/explain/create lessons on grammar and style, and assist students with specific language-acquisition strategies (vocabulary, syntax, fluency, etc.)
  • Ability to design and evaluate student presentations using rubrics that incorporate linguistic aspects (e.g. contrastive sound segments, question/statement intonation, word/syllable stress, etc.) as well as research-supported communication practices (i.e., managing politeness norms; explaining complexities; designing a tutoring session; coping with challenging interpersonal contexts such as conflict or disrespect) and/or advanced English Grammar through writing.


Minimum Requirements:
M.A. (Ph.D. preferred) in English, TESL, English as a Second Language, and/or applied linguistics in hand, and college-level teaching experience.
