ACCESS Plus Guidelines

Purpose – Why am I an ACCESS-Plus Student?

ACCESS-Plus is a status that allows students who have completed two semesters of the ACCESS program–with moderate success–to have a(n) additional semester(s) to meet the program goals.

Advising – Who is my advisor?

Contact the ACCESS-Plus advisor, Ms. Joan Elwood, at 703-993-5196 or jelwood@gmu.edu to schedule an appointment. If you need to cancel an appointment, please contact Ms. Elwood at least 12 hours in advance.

Fees – How much does it cost to be an ACCESS-Plus student?

ACCESS-Plus students pay the same tuition and fees of a regular Mason undergraduate in addition to a $1,000 ACCESS-Plus fee for each additional semester it takes to complete the program requirements. This fee is utilized to fund the tutoring, technology, advising, and program resources that will be made available to you as an ACCESS-Plus student.

Expectations – What do I have to do as an ACCESS-Plus Student?

All ACCESS-Plus students are required to attend one ACCESS-Plus workshop per semester. To sign up, go to: www.SignUpGenius.com/go/10C0D4FAAAD2FABFB6-accessplus1/16378128

All ACCESS Plus students are responsible for maintaining the following standards during the specified period:

  1. Overall grade point average (GPA) above 2.0;
  2. A semester course load not exceeding thirteen credit hours;
  3. A grade of C or better in each course; and
  4. Completing a new outbound application by the end of the semester.

Also, during this period students are expected to:

  1. Attend an ACCESS-Plus student workshop;
  2. Meet with Ms. Elwood at least once;
  3. Achieve all language-related requirements goals as stated in student’s completion review;
  4. Earn a minimum of 36 credits by end of  semester;
  5. Follow all student conduct and academic integrity guidelines as published by university policy; and
  6. Complete any other requirements assigned by the ACCESS-Plus advisor.

Process – When will I know if I have completed the program requirements?

ACCESS-Plus students will have their records reviewed after final grades have been posted to confirm that they have maintained all program requirements.

ACCESS-Plus students must also complete a new outbound application form and meet with an academic advisor either through the Academic Advising & Transfer Center or in the intended major to discuss major program requirements and probability of acceptance into student’s chosen major before the end of the ACCESS-Plus period.

Failure to meet these standards and expectations can result in:

  1. Inability to transfer into intended major
  2. Termination from the ACCESS program
  3. Dismissal from George Mason University
